Recent research suggests otherwise. In fact alcohol may help you fall asleep quickly but alcohol can actually disrupt sleep quality.

Drinking alcohol before bed can lead you to sleep soundly during the first half of the evening, before you become restless and agitated in the rest the next night.

The results of a study published in the Journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, indicate that alcohol causes people to wake up earlier than usual. The research was conducted by a team from the University of Akita, Japan.

They provide three different doses of pure alcohol at intervals of three weeks to the respondent. Then, they tested the quality of sleep. The study also found that drinking too much before bed is not only interfere with sleep but also have a negative effect on the body's digestive system and can cause other illnesses.

"Alcohol affects sleep framework entirely," said Dr. Yohei Sagawa, from Akita University, quoted by Female First.

Not only that, he added, the results of this study indicate that drinking actually cause insomnia and instead make better quality sleep.
